Information Architect / Content Designer

NewCity, a digital agency in the eastern US, is looking for someone to join our team to extend our information architecture and content design practice.

The Company

NewCity is a 27 year-old, 24-person firm, working in a highly collaborative, low-ego environment to create digital experiences for the real world. We ask big questions, dream big dreams, but at the end of the day we build things that work. Our culture is can-do, roll-up-your-sleeves, I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine. We’re constantly learning, experimenting, and reinventing NewCity.

We design and build enterprise-level websites for higher education, large non-profit, and commercial clients. Our core expertise is in the higher education and non-profit space where we’ve been pioneers of human-centered design for over two decades.

We’re organized around seven key disciplines: user experience, visual design, content strategy, development, digital marketing and analytics, project management and business development. Our project teams are made up of people from multiple disciplines.

The Job

Our content team members work with a project from stakeholder interviews through post-launch performance reporting to ensure everything supports the client’s business goals, meets user needs, and will be feasible for the people producing content in the products we build. You’ll write some web copy, but spend most of your time walking clients through the process of creating usable, accessible content themselves — for a new information architecture you’ve designed, a new CMS you’ve helped shape to their needs — training them to make and stick to plans long after you’re no longer on speed dial.
You’ll be responsible for:
  • Research
    • Performing content inventories and audits (both quantitative and qualitative) to diagnose issues with existing website content, presenting findings to clients
  • Information architecture
    • Defining content structures (information architecture in the form of site map spreadsheets, taxonomies, content models, content relationship diagrams, etc.)
    • Blocking out page layouts in a CMS or pattern library (not designing fresh user interfaces, but using existing pieces to plan content)
    • Writing content requirements for the client’s content contributors as well as our developers and designers
    • Creating page tables (like content wireframes) to help clients shape their content for new content types and CMS templates (e.g., degree program pages, faculty profiles, news articles)
  • Defining content processes
    • Recommending editorial and publishing workflows, governance models, or editorial calendars customized to a client’s content contributors
    • Leading content production efforts, including copywriting, copy editing, onboarding content contributors, and creating content briefs and copy decks
    • Leading messaging exercises with clients, creating message hierarchies for different audiences or content types
  • Team collaboration and content support
    • Collaborating with UX, visual design, and developers on design deliverables, prototypes, and production-ready web experiences
    • Working in the content management system alongside developers and UX architects to help structure the back end of a website or tool’s content and design an authoring environment that CMS contributors can successfully use
    • Working as a content admin in Drupal, WordPress, and other CMSes to help developers test, and training clients how to use the products we build

This job could be a great fit for you if you enjoy teaching people to produce great web content, whether you’re leading weekly editorial coaching sessions, facilitating a content workshop, or walking them through CMS training.

Required Skills/Experience:
  • 4+ years of experience in communications or web content management (preferably in higher ed)
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Creating information architecture deliverables (doesn’t have to be formal — a diagram, site map, or written explanation of a structure you created would do)
    • Creating instructions for writers or designers to help them carry out your plan for a piece of content (a content brief, a guide, a wireframe, etc.)
    • Writing copy for web interfaces
  • CMS experience is required (NewCity builds in Drupal and WordPress, but experience in other systems usually translates well, too)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting
Nice-to-Have:
  • Experience teaching and coaching others to write for web usability and accessibility
  • SEO experience (we mostly research search intent and define strategies for clients to use in specific content sections, rather than writing metadata or optimizing page copy)
