The Drupal community needs more people to try Drupal, but there is a giant hurdle at the beginning of the relationship that sends many would-be ambitious site builders running: setting up a local development environment.

Sure, there are Web hosts that offer single click installs, great for trying out Drupal, but we need to get our hands dirty in the code, so that won’t help us.

The official Drupal documentation is informative, but loaded with jargon which may block the uninitiated. The truth is, there have been giant leaps made in how we can set up development environments in recent years, so it should be easy once we choose a path.
