NewCity

Communications & Marketing Strategist

NewCity, a US-based digital agency, is looking for a Communications & Marketing Strategist who loves researching and creating content that reflects sharp thinking from yourself and our team. This will likely start out as a freelance or part-time position, but could grow into full-time.

The Company

NewCity is a 28 year-old, 30-person firm, working in a highly collaborative, low-ego environment to create digital experiences for the real world. We ask big questions, dream big dreams, but at the end of the day we build things that work. Our culture is can-do, roll-up-your-sleeves, I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine. We’re constantly learning, experimenting and reinventing NewCity.

We design and build enterprise-level websites and other digital experiences for higher education, large non-profit, and commercial clients. Our core expertise is in the higher education and non-profit space where we’ve been pioneers of human-centered design for over two decades.

We’re organized around five key disciplines: user experience (including research, strategy, IA and content design), design, development, enrollment strategy, and project management. Our project teams are made of people from multiple disciplines.

The Job

Our work and the stories we tell about lessons we learn fuel our continued success. We need your help to tell them more often and better. You’ll take ownership of our content marketing, study what our target audiences are looking for and how they engage with us, and create content that draws them to NewCity.

This role requires someone with a strong writing and editing background who has also had some experience with the ins and outs of digital strategy, design and development in the higher ed space. We don’t expect you to be an expert, but it will be challenging to write about these subjects if they are completely new to you. You need to be able to translate complex ideas into clear language that works for our audiences.

As NewCity’s Communications & Marketing Strategist you will:
  • Shape our content marketing strategy within broad themes that align with our main offerings and areas of expertise. Our intention is that this will involve free content that leads to in-depth gated content and interactive learning experiences. Our content marketing strategy should be informed by data from audience research, market research, analytics and SEO tools.
  • Maintain NewCity’s editorial calendar.
  • Monitor user engagement with content through analytics and share insights and recommendations with the team.
  • Ensure content is consistent with NewCity’s brand voice.
  • Read and keep up with news in our industry, what our peers are talking about, so that our content is relevant and timely.
  • Gather and chronicle stories, snippets, ideas, and inspiration that you can use to tell our story and our clients’ stories.
  • Write and edit articles for our website. This includes researching and writing your own content, interviewing team members and ghost-writing for them, or guiding and editing content written by team members.
  • Create case studies for use with our website, proposals and presentations that share insights and show how our clients succeed through partnership with NewCity.
  • Help write and edit in-depth publications that encompass our insights or research on a particular topic.
  • Write and edit our email newsletters.
  • Generally help us grow our base of friends and fans.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in communications and marketing, content strategy, or a similar role.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing effective content marketing strategies.
  • Solid understanding of SEO principles and ability to use SEO tools effectively.
  • Proficiency in using content management systems (CMS), like WordPress, and other digital marketing tools.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with an eye for compelling and innovative content.
  • Experience creating and editing graphics for web and print
  • Familiarity with digital analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to monitor and evaluate the performance of content.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to articulate complex ideas clearly.
  • Basic understanding of HTML and web publishing is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a strategic, forward-thinking mindset.
  • A flexible, collaborative approach to work and a passion for meeting customer needs.
Nice-to-Have:
  • Agency experience
