For the third time since joining NCM, I have left our annual retreat even happier in my job than I was in the days before. What is it that we can do in two days that can have such a marked and noticeable affect?
We review last year's goals and celebrate those we've achieved, and that's satisfying, But, it's not it. We analyze the goals we haven't achieved and attempt to understand why. We work together to set next year's goals and the steps to achieve them. Those are inspiring, but neither one is it. We drink beer and play MarioKart–a highlight, certainly–but that's not it either.
The one thing–the it–that three times now has left me feeling even more satisfied with my life at NCM isn't something we do. It's the reinforcement of something I see all year.
Everyone at NCM is a doer. There are no freeloaders here; there are no slackers. Each one of us is willing to put aside personal differences and slights real or imagined to grow and succeed as a team. Our personal and professional goals align, and to realize that my coworkers want the same things I want is hugely reassuring.
Because this year's retreat fell so near Thanksgiving, I'm reminded to give thanks for the opportunity to work with these fine folks.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and my sincerest wish that your job offers you the same sort of satisfaction.

I’ve dreaded both the retreats I attended, but always enjoyed them once they get started. It helps that they are so constructive.
