College Facebook groups getting hijacked
Brad Ward reported yesterday on his Squaredpeg blog that he's uncovered what looks like rings of people who are creating groups for incoming freshmen classes on Facebook (or getting admin privileges on these groups) for questionable purposes. These people are not actually applying to or planning to attend these schools. They may be developing networks that will allow them to easily target students with marketing campaigns.
Schools need to be aware that their Facebook communities may be…
Changing Behavior through Experience
Advertising Age reported on Advertising Age's CNBC CEO Summit earlier this week. In their article they quoted BBDO CEO Andrew Robertson, who said:
"We used to think about messages that created a case for a particular behavior. It's not about that now. It's about creating experiences that, by participating in them, change consumer behavior. I'm only interested in behavior. Everything else is just a proxy for it. Unless behavior changes, it's all been a waste of time and money. That's an…
White Paper: Conducting a Higher Ed Site Audit
In conjunction with our presentations during the summer of 2008 at Eduweb and CASE Europe, we have published a white paper describing a research-based approach to conducting a site audit for higher education web sites.
Here's the abstract:
What if you could find 20 ways to dramatically improve your school's website with only a few hours of work? The answers are hidden in your own site content. The question is how can you, with a limited amount of time and money, determine which…
David and Pamela’s Eduweb 2008 Presentation
Pamela Michael, Head of Digital Media and Marketing at Imperial College London, and I had the privilege of presenting this week at Eduweb 2008 in Atlantic City. It was held at the lovely (cough, cough) Trump Marina Casino.
We shared a case study from the Imperial College London website redesign, including how we researched the needs of various audiences and created mental models that guided our designs.
Skoolpool cool – Facebook connection for students & colleges
I traveled to Eduweb 2008 this week in Atlantic City (Pamela Michael of Imperial College London and I gave a presentation) and saw some cool new ideas for higher education and the web. One of those is SkoolPool. It's a Facebook application that allows:
- Colleges to create profile pages within Facebook, and
- Students to create lists of schools they're considering, and meet other people who are going to the same school.
SkoolPool was created by Academica Group based on extensive research into the…
NewCity Selected to Redesign CSU East Bay
NewCity has been selected to develop new information architecture and redesign the web site for California State University East Bay, located just south of Oakland in Hayward, California. Our friend Indi Young recommended us to CSUEB after she had done some initial research and architectural work for them focusing on prospective students.
Jeannine Everhart and David Poteet will lead the project, which kicks off in mid-April. We'll develop a set of mental models for each of their key audiences.…

Results that speak.
I think the most important thing that I didn't realize starting our work with NewCity was that we were gaining a partner. NewCity's approach is total collaboration to produce the best quality work. It was very important for us to be included in every step of the work - to make sure the process was also a learning experience for our team. Boy, we've learned a lot! And we thank you!
